What a Mess!
I am just recovering from a long weekend of work with a 4am start on Saturday morning at The Great East Swim Farmers' Market followed by Lavenham Farmers' Market on Sunday. One of the new producers making their debut at Lavenham was Love Meringues and, seeing the amazing piles of incredible meringues alongside the delightful punnets of fresh strawberries meant just one thing to me - Eton mess for pudding!
And so it was, on Sunday evening with much satisfaction (and heaps of gluttoney),a very tired head and two large glasses of Rose later, that I mixed up a large bowl of perfectly whipped cream, a bag of slightly chewy meringues, courtsey of Love Meringues and a couple of handfuls of hand picked strawberries before proceeding to eat the lot!
And the beauty of growing your own strawberries? When the proportion of cream and meringue appear to far outweigh the healthy ingredient, you just go outside to the veg patch, dig around under the strawberry leaves and, hey presto, there lies a few extra, gorgeous plump offerings that you missed first time round!
