The rules and standards below apply to all businesses that sell at our markets. They are designed to ensure that only farmers and producers of fresh local produce sell at our markets supplying market customers with the best possible produce. This helps maintain that we achieve truly local Farmers Markets that deliver good quality regional produce.
Our standards for Producers and Traders
Locally produced*
Only produce from within a 50 mile radius, but ideally within 30 miles, are eligible to sell at a Suffolk Market Events farmers market. This radius is extended to 100 miles for Fisherman.
Principal producer
The stall should be operated by someone directly involved in production. One of the key principles of a Farmers' Market is for the consumer to have a direct relationship with the producer. The principal producer, a representative directly involved in the production process or a close family member must attend the stall.
Primary, own produce
All primary produce sold at the market must be grown, reared, caught by the stall holder. Primary produce will have been grown or reared on the producer's land, for livestock and plants this means grown or finished (having spent at least 50% to its life) on the producer's land.
Game shot or caught within the defined local area may be sold at farmers markets by the person rearing or licensed to hunt the game.
Fish at a Farmers Market, ideally, should be sold by the fisherman. A representative of a number of known local boats may attend the market so long as the fishing grounds are known local, inshore waters.
Secondary, own produce
All secondary produce must be brewed, pickled, baked, smoked or processed by the stall holder using at least one ingredient grown or reared within the local area. Anyone processing produce or adding value is a secondary producer. For processed products the base product should be substantially altered and they must contain as much local ingredient as possible - this means grown or reared within the area the market defines as local.
Other criteria
The prime aim of the Farmers’ Markets is to develop a vibrant environment where consumers and producers are brought together and the farmers’ markets principles are promoted and upheld. Suffolk Market Events has a number of additional rules all of which are outlined below.
All traders must complete a Booking Form for the Farmers’ Market that they wish to attend and it is the traders responsibility to ensure this remains up to date.
Pitch fees must be paid, in full on the day of the market unless the event is a one off event which requires full payment in advance. If a trader does not turn up to an event, that pitch fee must be paid, in full; prior to the next market otherwise the trader will permanently lose the pitch.
All traders must have Public Liability Insurance the details of which must be given to Suffolk Market Events.
All food producers must have their premises registered with their local Environmental Health Department and must abide by the regulations set by Environmental Health.
Hand cleaning regulations, set by Environmental Health, must be adhered to. Where open high risk foods (for example cheese, cooked meats etc) are handled this should consist of at least a bowl, flask of hot water, soap and clean towel/paper towels. Stalls which are handling only low risk foods (veg, jars of preserves etc) or pre-packed high risk foods (wrapped cooked meats for example) should have a tub of hand sanitising wipes available. Alcohol gels are not appropriate for cleaning dirty hands.
Each producer’s stall should distinct and presented to the highest possible standard, clearly labelled with the producer’s name and place of business in addition to legal labelling requirements.
Traders must be punctual and well-presented and no stalls can be broken down before the end of the market.
You must sell only the products agreed on your Booking Form. Furthermore Suffolk Market Events reserves the right in its sole discretion to limit the products which the Producer may sell.
It is the responsibility of all stallholders to ensure that any electrical appliance used on a stall is tested to confirm their safety in accordance with the relevant standards and to provide appropriate evidence of compliance at Suffolk Market Events request. All other equipment used including gazebos, leg weights & tables must be in good, working condition.
Stallholders and their staff are expected to behave in a professional and socially acceptable manner at all times having regard to the interests of all traders and the market as a whole. Verbal abuse or physical aggression will not be tolerated in any circumstances towards any customer, trader or employee of the market.
Events are subject to cancellation or rescheduling at the discretion of Suffolk Market Events. We reserve the right at any time and without prior warning to change the venue, date or time of the event and Suffolk Market Events will not be liable for any additional loss or damage resulting from such changes.
* Suffolk Market Events defines ‘ Local’ as a radius from the market. A definition of 30 miles is ideal, up to 50 miles is acceptable. This area can however be extended up to 100 miles for fish as the distance to the Suffolk coast from our area is at least 70 miles.
